Anahata Chakra: Opening the Heart
Anahata Chakra: Opening the Heart
Right at the center of the seven chakras — literally and symbolically — sits Anahata, the heart chakra. It’s the bridge between the lower three chakras, rooted in survival, emotion, and personal power, and the upper three, which reach toward expression, intuition, and higher consciousness. Anahata is where the physical and spiritual meet through the simplest, most universal force: love.
At Ujain Yoga Studio, heart-opening work tends to resonate with students moving through grief, heartbreak, or simply a season of feeling emotionally guarded — Anahata is often the chakra people don’t know they’ve closed off until they start gently reopening it.
What Is Anahata Chakra?
Anahata means “unstruck” or “unhurt” — referring to a sound said to exist beyond the wear of physical experience, an inner note untouched by life’s damage. It’s located at the center of the chest, at heart level, and is the fourth of the seven main chakras.
- Element: Air
- Color: Green
- Location: Center of the chest, heart level
- Governs: Love, compassion, empathy, forgiveness, connection, relationships
Anahata isn’t only about romantic love — it governs your capacity for compassion toward others, self-love, and the ability to give and receive without fear.
Signs of a Balanced Anahata Chakra
- Genuine compassion for others without losing yourself
- Healthy, secure relationships and the ability to trust
- Comfort with both giving and receiving love
- Forgiveness — of others and of yourself
- A sense of connection to people and the world around you
Signs of Imbalance
When Anahata is blocked or underactive, common signs include:
- Difficulty trusting others or forming close relationships
- Emotional guardedness, coldness, or fear of intimacy
- Holding onto grudges or past hurt
- Loneliness despite being surrounded by people
- Physical tension in the chest, shoulders, or upper back
When Anahata is overactive, it can show up as:
- Codependency or losing your own identity in relationships
- Difficulty setting healthy boundaries
- Giving too much and neglecting your own needs
- Taking on others’ emotional pain as your own
A balanced Anahata allows love to flow both outward and inward — compassion for others without abandoning compassion for yourself.
Yoga Practices to Open Anahata
Asanas (Poses)
- Camel Pose (Ustrasana) — a deep backbend that physically and symbolically opens the chest
- Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana) — gently expands the chest while strengthening the back
- Fish Pose (Matsyasana) — opens the heart and throat, often paired with heart-chakra meditation
- Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana) — a gentler heart-opener, good for beginners
- Cow Pose (from Cat-Cow) — a soft, accessible way to begin opening the chest
Heart-opening backbends can bring up unexpected emotion — this is normal, and part of why these poses are practiced with awareness rather than rushed.
Pranayama
- Anulom Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing) — balances and softens emotional reactivity
- Slow, deep chest breathing with a focus on expanding the ribcage on the inhale
Meditation and Affirmation
Placing both hands over the heart, breathing slowly, and repeating an affirmation such as “I am open to giving and receiving love” can help soften emotional guardedness over time. Loving-kindness (Metta) style meditation — silently wishing wellbeing for yourself, then others — pairs especially well with Anahata work.
Lifestyle Support
- Practicing forgiveness, even in small ways, toward yourself and others
- Spending time in nature, especially around green spaces
- Journaling about relationships and emotional patterns
- Acts of genuine kindness, given without expectation of return
Bringing Anahata Into Your Practice
Heart-opening work isn’t about forcing vulnerability — it’s about creating enough physical and mental space that compassion, for yourself and others, has room to move freely again.
At Ujain Yoga Studio, we guide heart-chakra sequences with care, recognizing that opening the chest can open emotion too — and that’s welcomed, not rushed.
