Manipura Chakra: The Solar Plexus

Manipura Chakra: The Solar Plexus and Your Inner Fire

Ever notice how confidence, willpower, and even digestion all seem to live in the same general area — right around your upper belly? In the yogic energy system, that’s no coincidence. That region is home to Manipura, the third chakra, known as the seat of personal power.

At Ujain Yoga Studio, we often introduce Manipura work to students navigating self-doubt, burnout, or a general sense of feeling “stuck” — it’s frequently the chakra most out of balance in a high-pressure modern life.

What Is Manipura Chakra?

Manipura translates to “city of jewels” or “lustrous gem,” and is located at the solar plexus, roughly where your ribcage meets your upper abdomen. It’s the third of the seven main chakras, sitting between Svadhisthana (sacral, emotions) and Anahata (heart, love).

  • Element: Fire
  • Color: Yellow
  • Location: Solar plexus, above the navel
  • Governs: Confidence, willpower, self-esteem, personal identity, digestion, transformation

Where Muladhara grounds you and Svadhisthana connects you to feeling and creativity, Manipura is where you develop a sense of agency — the ability to act on your own behalf and trust your own judgment.

Signs of a Balanced Manipura Chakra

  • Healthy self-confidence without arrogance
  • A clear sense of personal identity and purpose
  • Strong willpower and follow-through on goals
  • Healthy digestion and metabolism
  • The ability to set boundaries and say no when needed

Signs of Imbalance

When Manipura is blocked or underactive, common signs include:

  • Low self-esteem, self-doubt, or people-pleasing tendencies
  • Difficulty making decisions or taking initiative
  • Feeling powerless or easily controlled by others
  • Digestive issues or sluggish metabolism
  • Procrastination or lack of motivation

When Manipura is overactive, it can show up as:

  • Controlling or domineering behavior
  • Perfectionism and an excessive need to be right
  • Anger, aggression, or impatience
  • Workaholic tendencies rooted in a need for validation

Balance, not maximum activation, is always the goal — Manipura works best in harmony with the chakras above and below it.

Yoga Practices to Balance Manipura

Asanas (Poses)

  • Boat Pose (Navasana) — directly engages the core, the physical seat of this chakra
  • Warrior I & III — builds strength, focus, and a sense of personal power
  • Twisting poses (seated or standing spinal twists) — stimulate digestion and the abdominal region
  • Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) — the “sun” sequence naturally activates the fire element

Pranayama

  • Kapalabhati (Skull-Shining Breath) — builds internal heat and energizes the solar plexus (practice under guidance)
  • Bhastrika (Bellows Breath) — energizing and warming, supports willpower and clarity

Meditation and Affirmation

Sitting quietly with a hand on the upper belly, breathing into that space, and repeating an affirmation such as “I trust myself” or “I am capable” can help rebuild a sense of inner authority over time.

Lifestyle Support

  • Spending time in sunlight, which resonates with the fire element
  • Setting and honoring small personal boundaries
  • Journaling around personal goals and decisions
  • Yellow foods and mindful eating to support digestive health

Bringing Manipura Into Your Practice

Chakra work isn’t about mystical fixes — it’s a framework that pairs physical practice (asana, breath) with reflection, giving you concrete tools to rebuild confidence and follow-through where it’s been lacking.

At Ujain Yoga Studio, we incorporate chakra-focused sequences into select classes, helping students connect physical practice to the areas of life they’re actively working on.
