Yoga for Better Sleep
Yoga for Better Sleep: Poses & Practices That Help
Lying awake with a racing mind, or waking up feeling like you never really rested — poor sleep affects nearly everything else in life, from mood to focus to physical health. While there’s no single fix for every sleep issue, a consistent, gentle yoga practice is one of the most evidence-backed, side-effect-free tools for improving both how quickly you fall asleep and how deeply you stay asleep.
At Ujain Yoga Studio, sleep is one of the most common reasons students first come to a slower-paced class — and often one of the first things they notice improving.
Why Yoga Helps With Sleep
Poor sleep is frequently tied to an overactive nervous system — a body still in “alert” mode even when it’s time to rest. Yoga addresses this directly:
- Calms the nervous system by activating the parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) response
- Releases physical tension built up from stress or long hours at a desk, which can otherwise keep the body from settling
- Slows and regulates breathing, which is closely linked to the body’s readiness for sleep
- Quiets mental chatter through the focus required in gentle movement and breath awareness
Unlike sleep aids, these effects build with regular practice rather than fading with tolerance.
Best Yoga Poses for Sleep
1. Legs-Up-The-Wall (Viparita Karani)
One of the most reliably calming poses in yoga. Lying with legs resting up a wall shifts blood flow, relaxes tired legs, and settles the nervous system — often done for 5–15 minutes before bed.
2. Child’s Pose
A gentle forward fold that releases tension in the back and shoulders while encouraging slow, deep breathing.
3. Reclined Butterfly Pose
Lying on your back with the soles of the feet together and knees relaxed open gently opens the hips and chest, supported by pillows if needed for comfort.
4. Supine Spinal Twist
A slow twist while lying down releases tension along the spine — a common place stress accumulates by the end of the day.
5. Cat-Cow (a few slow rounds)
Gentle, rhythmic movement paired with breath can help transition the body out of “doing” mode before settling into stillness.
6. Savasana
The final resting pose — lying completely still, eyes closed, breath natural — is where the nervous system fully downshifts. Even five extra minutes here can make a noticeable difference.
Breathing Techniques for Sleep
- 4-7-8 Breathing — inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7, exhale slowly for 8; a simple pattern known for encouraging quick relaxation
- Bhramari (Humming Bee Breath) — the gentle vibration of a soft hum on the exhale is especially effective right before bed
- Extended exhale breathing — simply making your exhale longer than your inhale (e.g., inhale for 4, exhale for 6) shifts the body toward relaxation
A Simple 10-Minute Bedtime Routine
- Cat-Cow — 5 slow rounds, syncing breath with movement
- Child’s Pose — hold for 1–2 minutes, breathing deeply
- Reclined Butterfly — 2–3 minutes, arms relaxed by your sides
- Legs-Up-The-Wall — 5 minutes, eyes closed
- Savasana with 4-7-8 breathing — 2–3 rounds, then let the breath return to natural
Practiced consistently, even a short routine like this can help signal to your body that it’s time to wind down.
A Few Practical Tips
- Keep the room dim and screens away during this routine — bright light and notifications work against everything the practice is doing
- Move slowly; sleep-focused yoga is not the time for intensity
- Consistency matters more than duration — five honest minutes nightly beats an occasional 30-minute session
- If sleep difficulties are persistent, severe, or affecting daily functioning, it’s worth speaking with a doctor, since yoga supports sleep but doesn’t replace medical care for underlying sleep disorders
